Just a warning for those getting nostalgic over Soul Calibur: No widescreen(moot poot), no online play(bigger point), no mission mode(flat out horrible).
It looks nice, but it’s gimped to hell it seems.

I’m just a bit frustrated with it. I mean, it looks good and plays good, but there’s little point to playing it as everything is already unlocked for you. One of the great things about the series has been that you can invest countless hours playing to unlock things, and just throwing it all at your feet like this really sours me. About the only incentives it has going for it is achievements, although I guess fans of straight up arcade mode fighters will be fine with the bots, and I’m sure local multiplayer is fun.

so wait... are you tlaking about the new Soul Calibur 4?? the one with Darth/Yoda?? They dont have widescreen??!?!?? wow, what year is it? And boo on the mission mode. The only thing that ever kept me going in the older SC games was trudging through the dungeon to try and unlock all the possible weapons/outfits, etc.

I still have my Dreamcast hooked up and another Dreamcast in box as a backup unit as well as 2 mint copies of Soul Calibur. So I’ll not be buying the lame XBLA version of one of the greatest fighting games ever made. I just feel kinda sorry for people who never got to play the Dreamcast version. But then again since it does not have online play, HD graphics, or achievements most people probably would not want to play it at this point since that’s all some people care about.

its been like that for years... screenshots are popular because of it. I remember games on PS selling just for the cutscenes.. gameplay was blah. Its just like anything in life, houses, cars, etc. When you want to sell them for top dollar.. put a pretty new coat of paint on it.

It has been that way for awhile now but it is worse now. If you go to the xbox site and check the Soul Calibur section you’ll see how many people are crying about lack of online play. Now-a-days I see lack of online play in a game a good thing. Not to mention they just can’t seem to make a fighting game with online play that does not lag something nasty. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, gaming is just not as good as it use to be. The games, devs, and gamers have all changed for the worse. Anyway, let’s get back on topic.....

Actually, based on the couple I’ve played lately, it seems companies are finally getting down solid netcodes for online fighters. The thing is, online play certainly wouldn’t have killed Namco and would have added some replay value, although it’s not to be expected because it wasn’t in the original.
It’s the lack of mission mode and the cool rewards from it that have me put off. The fact that everything is just unlocked and sitting there for you onc eyou buy it irritates me. And I don’t buy the line that it was cut to accomodate the old size limit of 150MB, as the game is 180MB+, so it was obviously pusehd over at some point during development.
