A few years ago, I was invited down to Ensenada Mexico to be part of a pit crew for a Baja 1000 race team. It wasn’t one of the big million dollar trophy truck racers, but these guys had their stuff together. I volunteered for a week down in Mexico and had a blast. Here’s the race truck....

I was in charge of one of the chase trucks, which basically goes from checkpoint to checkpoint during the race to ensure that all the proper supplies are at each station. And, be on site in case the truck needs repairs at a checkpoint. In the middle of the night, the truck had spun an axel shaft and they radioed in that they needed help. The truck got in fairly late, but the crew for Robbie Gordon (yes, the NASCAR driver) was still there and saw us take that truck, lift it and change out the rear axle splines and basically rebuild the entire rear end of the truck in literally 15 minutes. We all worked together to get it done and had them back out on the track in record time. The crew chief for Robbie Gordon came over... now keep in mind he’s a multi-million dollar mechanic.. and said that he saw more skill and abilities out of us, a bunch of amatures than he’s seen in most high paid mechanics on professional teams. That was one hell of a compliment.
