Its hard to put it up against Anne Rice. She has a totally different authoring style. A lot of critics put Matheson’s work as THE book that changed the way we think about vampires. It was said that it gave a shockingly horrific view of how they could be instead of the Bram Stoker vision of how they were.
Personally... its a collection of short stories all revolving around the same subject and it paints a very dark picture of a viral outbreak. I really enjoyed the book, but I wouldn’t put it up there with the greats, honestly. For anyone who enjoys novels, its still worth checking out, although its a bit dated in its context.
BTW... trivia for you. I Am Legend isn’t the first movie adaptation of the book. In 1971 there was a movie called Omega Man that followed along closely to the book.
