Competitions will appear once every state in a region is fully colored, they will be marked by a crown icon. Competitions are always "Dance Rival" type challenges.
To unlock songs, you must complete Competitions in the following regions:

Quest Mode: Unlockable Songs from Special Events
Special Invitational Events appear randomly on the map as Envelopes. They are always "Fanbase" type challenges.

Unlock Dance Champion
You can unlock the lady that you face in the final battle of the dance tournaments simply by beating her once in a dance tournament. After you have done so, you can select her as your dancer. Please note that she has not alternate costumes.
